Internship Progress (Week of February 23rd)

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

This week we held a meeting before Women's month. We were coming up with ideas to promote not only the celebratory month but also awareness of Embrace Relief's Women Empowerment program. My proposal was to create a design inspired by quilts. Quilts tell a story and provides a glimpse into a way of life or even heritage. This idea came from the square snapshots of students and educators from the program that were given to me.

Instead of inputting patchwork the program members are contributing their goals for the community's future. However, there was a time limit that restricted our abilities. Therefore, Sheanine, another team member offered we create a multi-post on Instagram that contains the acronym R.I.S.E and a focus center image that captures the teachers and the program's logo.

Along with the social media post we also decided to create a short video dedicated to donors. The video is a sweet reminder on what their the

contributions are helping out with and how it impacts Tanzania.

Here's the animation proposal I came up with:

Short Animation Proposal:

We need a video designed for our donors. The main purpose of this video is to inform donors how the donation process works and the impact their contributions have on our program. After discussing it as a team, we came up with an idea for this animation. We want our analogy of a tree to be illustrated along with the key components of the donation process.

Which are:

1. The donor = The seed/roots

2. Their contributions = Water/Sunlight

3. The educator/Receiver = The trunk and branches

4. Their students/Future = Apples

Here’s the sequence:

The team wants to display the analogy alongside the illustrations of the key components. The main piece to this chain of events is the donor. Without them, there is no action taking place and no tree being grown. The donor should be the first to be illustrated and featured in this short. The donor is viewed as the seed and roots of a tree. Their contributions to the program are viewed as nutrients that ensure a healthy tree. As the nutrients are being given to the planted seed, the trunk begins to grow. The trunk/branches represent Tanzanian female educators which are growing strong and promising. As its branches begin to lift and spread out evenly, leaves begin to blossom along with red bright apples. The greenery and apples symbolize the 10,000 students these 20 female educators are looking after. Again, the process of the tree’s growth cycle should be seamless and apparent from seed to its final stage. As the remarkable tree finally ends its growing process, the camera can zoom in to a single apple as it carefully falls out of the frame and onto the desk of a female educator who appears to be grateful and happy.

Here's the rough storyboard I created for the animator to review:

Script:

How can 1 person improve the lives of 10,000 children in Tanzania? Through RISE, Embrace Relief’s women’s empowerment program, female educators in Tanzania are equipped with diplomas in Educational Leadership, enabling them to improve the quality of education for thousands of children. As a supporter of RISE, you plant the seeds of this program, serving as the roots of change. With every contribution, you continue to provide the nutrients needed for Tanzania’s growth. Each graduate of RISE will branch off into Tanzania’s education system and help create a future for the country’s youth. The fruits of their labor are the thousands of students who will serve as catalysts of Tanzania’s progress. With your support, we will RISE up for women’s equality and Tanzania’s future.

First Draft:

Draft one notes:

The team came together and reviewed the animation. Here are the following revisions we would like to see in the next draft.

  • 0:01 - Please use the same man in this frame as the man at :19-:20. The man is symbolic of the donor and should be the same.

  • 0:05 - The R.I.S.E. program and it should be spelled as a vertical acronym. (We need to provide the animator with the logos)

  • 0:13 - Please soften transitions between photos of women .. Please use dissolve transitions

  • 0:25 - The video does not reflect the sketches sent… please add an active visual of:

    • A seed being planted in the ground - script cue “As a supporter of rise…”

    • Watering can watering the seed - script cue “With every contribution..”

    • Trunk, branches growing - script cue “Each graduate of RISE..”

    • Leaves/apples growing and falling - script cue “The fruits of their labor…”

  • 0:39 - We thought the current depiction of the educator resembles a lawyer more than an actual teacher. It would be best for the educator to be in a classroom setting for she is meant to represent all educators. Is it possible to include children’s characters in the classroom setting with her? The woman’s office should resemble a classroom, not an office

  • We would like to see the R.I.S.E. logo incorporated somewhere in the classroom setting as a poster or such where the acronym is spelled out. On the chalkboard behind the teacher’s desk, please put thank you written in chalk and the embrace relief logo underneath thank you. On a picture frame on the wall in the classroom, please put the program logo in the picture frame--- see below for logo

  • Remove woman and percentage going up frame at :43

  • Reiterate the importance of a donation at the end (Add logo) Please fix obstructed Embrace Relief logo.

  • Again the animation should have a purple color palette for solid backgrounds for it is the color of the cause. Please change hypnosis effect at the end (0:49 sec mark)

Finally, for this week we as a team volunteered to sort out through books making sure they were safe to be sent to children. It was a fun experience and I was able to socialize with fellow interns. My supervisor, Elizabeth, even allowed me to take one of the books.
